About Us
Our Story
Bobby and Mykala
We are Bobby and Mykala Smith. Before traveling and taking pictures in some of the most epic places, we owned a CrossFit gym for 10 years and before that Bobby was a firefighter for the US Forest Service and Kala taught gymnastics. It may all seem random but all of our past experience makes everything we do today a perfect fit.
In 2020, when most of the world had to shut down due to the pandemic, we had to get creative in order to keep paying the bills. So we pulled out an old camera we had lying around, dusted it off, and started recording at-home workout videos for the clients at our gym. We had no idea then that this would turn out to be such a life-changing moment for us and our family.
Cameras and working with people just seem to fit our personalities like a glove. Bobby is the genius behind the camera and we like to think of Kala as our "what do I do with my hands" coach.
While his career background may be in fire, Bobby has always had a passion for photography and videography. Even as a kid he always had a camera in his hand and was teaching himself how to edit photos and videos before social media and editing software was even a thought. In 2004 his passion for cameras led him to a formal photography education while completing his degree in fire science. He brings the skills that he has learned from the Forest Service to every adventure we capture. He's a strong hiker, can navigate any terrain, knows a thing or two about repelling down ropes, has medical and first aid experience, and always keeps safety a priority.
Kala's background in gymnastics, bodybuilding, and posing come in handy at every photoshoot too. Just like Bobby, her passion for fitness and performing began as a child. She started teaching gymnastics in 2005 which lead right into coaching CrossFit in 2011. Her love of health and fitness developed even further when she took up bodybuilding competitions in 2016. Gymnastics, CrossFit, and bodybuilding competitions all have one major thing in common; body awareness, and Kala has a keen eye for the human body. She can sculpt the lines and curves on any body and make that awkward feeling of being in front of a camera disappear.
By the end of 2021, we had revived our CrossFit business and were back to a thriving pace again. But for some reason, and we can't quite explain it, we felt this pull to leave it all. I mean everything! We dissolved the CrossFit gym, sold our home, bought an RV, and took our whole family on the road (two kids, 6 months pregnant with the third, and a dog!). We took a huge leap of faith and we're so glad we did.
We feel so blessed to get to call this whole travel, photography, and adventure thing our full-time job. And the best part is we get to do it together. Our family loves being outdoors. We say it all the time, "we are better people when we are on an adventure."
